Birthdays: It's Not About the Age Anymore

Birthday Girl

I had such a fabulous time this weekend. It was so nice to be able to relax with my husband and our friends in the coastal town of Monterey, CA. We ate at nice restaurants and didn't have to worry about our kids running around or being quiet or eating their food. We drank wine, we walked around town, and didn't have to stop for meltdowns, naps or diaper changes. I slept like a baby with the ocean roaring loudly right outside our hotel. Bliss.

Relaxed couple

Of course I missed my babies, but one day/night away from them isn't bad. It's healthy for my husband and I to bond and regroup as a couple. I think I am a better mom after a little break. They loved the shark and pirate books I brought home for them, and the little replica vintage road cars I bought on the wharf. It was 70 degrees and sunny, so we did our fair share of walking around and window shopping. We even managed to fit in cocktails and the football game.

It was great to call and check in with my parents, who were watching them for us, to see how they slept the night before. Monkey asked to talk to me and promptly said, "Happy Birthday Mommy! I miss you!." It was truly adorable. And, since we are only an hour away from Monterey, I was still home by 4pm on my actual birthday so I got to spend the evening with my children. We promptly took them to the park to play for an hour and then had a relaxing dinner at home. I couldn't ask for a better birthday, I had the best of all worlds. I am truly blessed.

  3. My first night away from my daughter was hard. But sooooo necessary!

We are planning a trip in April for a week without the baby. I am very anxious. But also really excited. I think it will be a great recharge.

  6. We have a 9 year old and a 6 year old, and have only been away from them once on an overnight... five long years ago. I wish we had more opportunities to do that! You are very lucky to have family nearby... that will also watch your kids. Are they for hire?

Sounds like you had a very happy birthday :-)

  8. I have to agree w/ you that a night or two away from the kiddo's is a healthy thing. B/c my husband is in the Army and we are away from family, we rely on our Army-Family and we all trade off for date night.. that's the BEST thing EVER!!!! :) Happy Birthday!!!
